BuzzFeed Sued Over Publication of Unverified 35-page Dossier of Smears Against Trump
Editor’s note: the report in question was used in an Intelligence Community and media (BuzzFeed and CNN) smear campaign against Trump. We called it fake news.
The New York Times reports: Compiled by a former British intelligence operative who was hired by Mr. Trump’s Republican rivals and later by supporters of Hillary Clinton, the document had circulated for months among high-ranking government officials and journalists. The veracity of its claims had been investigated but never proved.
The website recode reports: After being sued for defamation, BuzzFeed has apologized to a Russian tech executive whose name appeared in the Trump dossier the website published last month. It’s the first sign that BuzzFeed has encountered serious repercussions for publishing a 35-page dossier of unverified accusations about alleged ties between Donald Trump and Russian intelligence. Aleksej Gubarev, the CEO of XBT Holding, a Luxembourg-based web hosting company, sued BuzzFeed and Ben Smith, its editor-in-chief, for publishing the document.
